Chicago's Pale Horseman...Prepare yourself for an assualt!

PALE HORSEMAN
"Self-Titled"
2013
Independent

First things first... This is one of the tightest, heaviest records I've heard in a very very long time. The LP kicks off with the track "Black River" with a Psyched out sonic swell so intense... just to drop right into extremely heavy Bungle chords and the chaos ensues. The dual vocals have an overall Neurosis-esque feel to them with growls reminiscent of Aaron Turner of Isis/HydraHead fame.  But without the repetitiveness Neurosis and Isis are so well-known for. This has quickly climbed up to one of the bands to watch for in 2013!!  As "Black River" flows it just gets more and more brutal and then seamlessly transitions into one of the HEAVIEST breakdowns. We're talking skull-crushing, ANVILS falling from the sky type breakdowns.  No weak shit here, son! Lyrically this LP is filled with themes of end times, misanthropy, drugs and depression. And it all blends perfectlyI HAVE NO CLUE how this band has not been picked up by a label yet!  It's almost a travesty!!  This is how it's done. My personal favorite on the LP is the 4th track entitled, "Aborigine".  It slams you in the face with some sick riffs.  Reminiscent  vocally and musically to such bands as... Neurosis, Mastodon, Cavity, and GODFLESH with the grooves of EyeHateGod and that sweet NOLA sound, but with a refreshing twist.  It's not all pentatonics here! We're talking melodic minors that carry the album almost flawlessly.  Continuing on, "Paranormal Unknown", takes you on a slowed down, pure psyched-out sludge ride into the abyss.  Chris's drumming really shines through on the track, "Souls of Us". His accent's and intricacies match the amazing guitar riffage perfectly.  This is just plain STELLAR!  DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS BAND!     -D. Barski

The onslaught continues straight thru beginning to end.  The LP contains 8 total songs.

New Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats pick up right where they left off!

Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats
"Mind Control"
2013
Rise Above/Metal Blade

Quick review from Doommantia

With “Blood Lust” being one of the most defining records of 2011 (and most probably the entire decade that will come) UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS became “underground” stars in less than a night and judging from the price of their “long gone” releases, they have turned into the ultimate collector’s band. “Mind Control” UNCLE ACID’s (yeah, the “& THE DEADBEATS” part is cut from now on) third album is fairly regarded as one of the most anticipated records of the year.

From the very notes of “Mt. Abraxas” it is clear that the band walks the same path as “Blood Lust”: Horror movie themes, occultism, drugs, 70’s psych, BLACK SABBATH and co. To be fair “Mind Control” shows a wider variety of influences, none of which falls outside the “retro” scope of course. So, you might come across some BEATLES or even early IRON MAIDEN influences but all blended artistically well.

Although, most of the tracks have simpler song structures the new album requires more careful listening. It can be said that the record is divided in two parts, with the first containing all the “Pop” tracks and the second focusing on the psychedelic side of things.

The difference here is that UNCLE ACID have lost the advantage of surprise and with it they seem to have abolished the inspirational driving force that made “Blood Lust” a big hit. From that perspective “Mind Control” doesn’t seem enough to repeat the blast of its predecessor. On the other hand the true retro vide that every UNCLE ACID release supplies to the fans is somewhat phenomenal, So the final question is: can you resist this overdose of 70’s horror? I doubt it…

CHEERS!!!

LEATHER NUN america Kicks off the DOTDIII countdown!

So...A few times a week leading up to the DOTDIII Fest, I'll be posting hand-picked songs from each band for those unfamiliar. Cheers!

NOW.
Let us begin with one of my personal favorites
one of California's finest of Doom/Riff Rockers.  Earlier works sound a lot like an American Orange Goblin or that classic EARLY Alabama Thunder Pussy.  Utilizing sleazy blues scales and rocking them out ridiculously hard!! They're not afraid to bring the Hammond and Leslie into the mix either, which is quite a welcome sound for me at least.  Reminiscent of The Atomic Bitchwax as well at times. The riffs are so groove heavy and then can just send you off into oblivion with some of the heaviest death and roll I've heard in quite some time!  THIS WILL BE A TREAT!!

LEATHER NUN america
