Days of the Doomed III and THE GATES OF SLUMBER slip it in...

DAYS OF THE DOOMED FEST III & THE BLOODY GLOVE PROUDLY PRESENT...

THE GATES OF SLUMBER
Rise Above

If The Gates of Slumber aren't the biggest heavy metal band in the Indianapolis area, then they're at least the most recognized doom metal group in the area. Formed in 1998, the group has gathered acclaim in the underground for its particularly theatrical musical style and strong riffs. But for the group's fifth full-length studio album, a number of changes have occurred. For starters, this is the first album to feature former Sourvein drummer "Cool" Clyde Paradis alongside longtime bassist Jason McCash and founding guitarist/vocalist Karl Simon.
While most of the band's career has been spent mixing their dirge-like sound with traditional and power metal themes in a way similar to classic Candlemass, this is easily their most stripped down album to date. Nothing on here is really simplified or made more accessible by previous standards, but you could say that the album has a rather grounded feel. The riffs are downtrodden, the vocals are mournful, and the pacing is arguably slower than it's ever been. -suite101

Days of the Doomed Fest III Countdown | EARTHEN GRAVE

The Countdown to Days of the Doomed III is upon us!!
The Bloody Glove is proud to present today's featured artist...

Earthen Grave
"Self-Titled"
2012
Ripple Music

Doom and thrash metal could not be further apart in the spectrum of metal.  Chicago's Earthen Grave fuses every element of each sub-genre and basically makes it their own. The 6 piece includes renowned violinist, Rachel Barton Pine, which adds an insane dynamic to the style this band has come to establish! I also must include some of the other amazing musicians that are in this band.  RON HOLZNER(ex-TROUBLE) on BASS. Not to mention... CHRIS WOZNIAK (LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR and BLOOD OF MARTYRS Fame) drumming!!  Mark Weiner's vocals are very reminiscent of Chris Cornell, which is NOT a bad thing! Love every second of this band!  This is a super group of sorts in my opinion!  Can't wait for all ears to BLEED come June 22nd for DAYS OF THE DOOMED FEST III @ The Blue Pig!!

Days of the Doomed & The Bloody Glove Present, KING GIANT

Days of the Doomed and The Bloody Glove continue our countdown with none other than Virginia's own...

KING GIANT
"Dismal Hollow"
2012
Plastic Head/Red Distro

Virginia's KING GIANT has been destroying everything in their path since their inception.  These Appalachian rockers are whiskey-fueled and ready to blow your face off.  When I put this record on, I immediately feel the need to get on a Harley and ride off into the night!
Check out what others have had to say about these cats...

Simmered in a cauldron of Appalachian doom and sordid, straight-faced Americana, King Giant appeal to deep intestinal intuitions. Dismal Hollow is an effortless listen, a front-to-back rager and a swig of searing, satisfying songwriting. Meticulous musicianship is married to perfectly coarse, whiskey scarred vocals that slake a desperate, heretofore unknown thirst.

King Giant traverse a well worn musical landscape, littered with bands that have sewn Southern sensibilities onto Sabbath's legacy. This isn't my usual fare, but I find Dismal Hollow colossally addictive. Solid riffs stomp, romp and swing with snappy melodies and hard-bitten blues. Wicked, writhing solos inject exuberant accents into the otherwise somber proceedings. Melancholic leads and flourishes add an enticing sheen to compositional lulls. All of King Giant's substantial creative forces are focused on songcraft; the results are utterly captivating.

A great deal of Dismal Hollow's allure is owed to Dave Hammerly's vocals. Technically, this is clean singing; his voice is actually anything but. These brash, filthy bellows recall Glenn Danzig's style and display a distinct charisma. Each track tells a particular story, conveyed with bleak solemnity and tinged with ravenous rage. Dismal Hollow tells tales of bootlegging, abject alcoholism and spousal abuse with murderous retribution. This is real life.

Everything about Dismal Hollow resonates in my mind and memory. I've been frequently compelled to crank this on the stereo and sing along. Whatever your musical predilections and depravities might be, King Giant are worth a look. “Demon whiskey speaks for me.” -atanamar

Maryland Monsters, CHOWDER, slips it in

Days of the Doomed III and The Bloody Glove
Present...

CHOWDER
"Passion Rift"
2012
Bland Hand/I,Voidhanger

Another great band to come out of the Maryland/DC area!

Songs such as “The Innsmouth Look” and “Head Full of Rats,” with their forward-rushing, unrelenting progressive metal, sit next to atmospheric pieces such as “Mazuku” and “Mysterioid,” in a mix part hardcore, part Lovecraft, and part autobiography. And then there is the epic title cut “Passion Rift,” as big in its scope as “Hemispheres,” a journey through a landscape at times peaceful, tense, melancholic, aggressive, and nightmarish. This is music that communicates something important, and it does so without lyrics or vocals.
Born in hardcore, bred on metal, and nourished by prog, Chowder’s all-instrumental music allows Josh’s precision arrangements and heavy guitar playing, Chad’s technical yet propulsive drumming, and Doug’s deep bass anchoring to rattle walls and turn heads. Fans of The Obsessed, Unorthodox, Rush, Godflesh, Bad Brains, and Fugazi, take notice.

Maryland's finest... Beelzefuzz DOTD3

DAYS OF THE DOOMED III
AND THE BLOODY GLOVE
PRESENT...

BEELZEFUZZ

Beelzefuzz is full of colors they're very hard to classify and that's quite fun in their case. This 5 tracks demo is very good and shows great promise for this band. Like their name indicates, it's fuzzy but it's also quite melodic. The sound is rich and I was surprised to learn that they were only 3 dudes. The vocalist/guitarist/leader Dana Ortt is a genuine talent and he's the true driving force. The whole demo completely blew me away with songs like ''Lotus Jam'' or ''Hardluck Melody''. While it's doom, I can't really feel the omnipresent imprint of Black Sabbath in their sound. There's a decent NWOBHM influence especially in the vocals and some of the more melodic riffs, but the main thing I sensed in Beelzefuzz is the overt psychedelic and hard rock influences. These guys are definitely big fans of Led Zep, T-Rex, Cream or Steppenwolf but they mixed this love for the golden era of rock with Judas Priest and doom metal. The demo while not quite heavy or even not totally metal totally pays off with its slow groovy numbers like the opening track ''Peace Mind'', it's sexy, comforting and alluring. I do feel like in an hippie harem full of scantily eunuchs on drugs, probably mushrooms or acid. There's a fountain full of Champagne or Mountain Dew in the middle of the huge tent, I won't try it personally but these guys probably did.

You can feeeeeeel the love in their music, it's not dark at all. The riffs are often joyous, it's like if their whole world ignored that grunge and self-hatred was once something popular. Yeah, even Dave Grohl realized that but his music is inane, at least he teamed up with John Paul Jones to create groovy stuff in Them Crooked Vultures! Talking of grunge I can't say they ignored the 90s phenomenon completely. Dana's voice can be compared to Staley, Cornell or Vedder a bit but on super Silver Sour Diesel Haze or whatever drug that makes him happy. I usually dislike happy music but this is a totally great ''I'm on the patio with a cold beer during a sunny summer day'' kind of band and I can appreciate that. Their retro rock formula works and they don't need dildos and bullplugs to make it worthwhile.

Chicago's Pale Horseman...Prepare yourself for an assualt!

PALE HORSEMAN
"Self-Titled"
2013
Independent

First things first... This is one of the tightest, heaviest records I've heard in a very very long time. The LP kicks off with the track "Black River" with a Psyched out sonic swell so intense... just to drop right into extremely heavy Bungle chords and the chaos ensues. The dual vocals have an overall Neurosis-esque feel to them with growls reminiscent of Aaron Turner of Isis/HydraHead fame.  But without the repetitiveness Neurosis and Isis are so well-known for. This has quickly climbed up to one of the bands to watch for in 2013!!  As "Black River" flows it just gets more and more brutal and then seamlessly transitions into one of the HEAVIEST breakdowns. We're talking skull-crushing, ANVILS falling from the sky type breakdowns.  No weak shit here, son! Lyrically this LP is filled with themes of end times, misanthropy, drugs and depression. And it all blends perfectlyI HAVE NO CLUE how this band has not been picked up by a label yet!  It's almost a travesty!!  This is how it's done. My personal favorite on the LP is the 4th track entitled, "Aborigine".  It slams you in the face with some sick riffs.  Reminiscent  vocally and musically to such bands as... Neurosis, Mastodon, Cavity, and GODFLESH with the grooves of EyeHateGod and that sweet NOLA sound, but with a refreshing twist.  It's not all pentatonics here! We're talking melodic minors that carry the album almost flawlessly.  Continuing on, "Paranormal Unknown", takes you on a slowed down, pure psyched-out sludge ride into the abyss.  Chris's drumming really shines through on the track, "Souls of Us". His accent's and intricacies match the amazing guitar riffage perfectly.  This is just plain STELLAR!  DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS BAND!     -D. Barski

The onslaught continues straight thru beginning to end.  The LP contains 8 total songs.

New Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats pick up right where they left off!

Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats
"Mind Control"
2013
Rise Above/Metal Blade

Quick review from Doommantia

With “Blood Lust” being one of the most defining records of 2011 (and most probably the entire decade that will come) UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS became “underground” stars in less than a night and judging from the price of their “long gone” releases, they have turned into the ultimate collector’s band. “Mind Control” UNCLE ACID’s (yeah, the “& THE DEADBEATS” part is cut from now on) third album is fairly regarded as one of the most anticipated records of the year.

From the very notes of “Mt. Abraxas” it is clear that the band walks the same path as “Blood Lust”: Horror movie themes, occultism, drugs, 70’s psych, BLACK SABBATH and co. To be fair “Mind Control” shows a wider variety of influences, none of which falls outside the “retro” scope of course. So, you might come across some BEATLES or even early IRON MAIDEN influences but all blended artistically well.

Although, most of the tracks have simpler song structures the new album requires more careful listening. It can be said that the record is divided in two parts, with the first containing all the “Pop” tracks and the second focusing on the psychedelic side of things.

The difference here is that UNCLE ACID have lost the advantage of surprise and with it they seem to have abolished the inspirational driving force that made “Blood Lust” a big hit. From that perspective “Mind Control” doesn’t seem enough to repeat the blast of its predecessor. On the other hand the true retro vide that every UNCLE ACID release supplies to the fans is somewhat phenomenal, So the final question is: can you resist this overdose of 70’s horror? I doubt it…
