Would You Like Some Black Angels Brownies?? Mmmmm....Brownies.

The Black Angels
"The Black Angels EP" (2005)

I was lucky enough to see one of the Black Angels first shows ever while living in Austin, TX in 2004.  AMAZING!!  They were a complete wall-of-sound...LITERALLY.  Their sound is incredibly drug-drenched psychedelia with an almost Kraut Rock and Garage layering to their melodies.  HAZY & HEAVY...Great Combination.

The Black Angels
"Directions to See A Ghost" (2008)
"Directions to See A Ghost" is The Black Angels' Second LP and it rips!  They definitely pay homage on this album to their hometown 60's Psychedelic predecessors, The Thirteenth-Floor Elevators.   This is one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years.

Wooden Shjips 7 inch...

Wooden Shjips
Vampire Blues 7-inch
(2008)
While I was doing some digging through some records earlier this morning,  I stumbled on the rad 2 song 7-inch from San Fran's own... Wooden Shjips.  A couple years ago (2008) they recorded a fucking badass cover of Neil Young's, "Vampire Blues", which ironically is also the name of the 7-inch. Sarcasm. Check it out.

Behold! The Monolith 2 FOR 1!!!

Behold! The Monolith
2008 Self Titled E.P.
(Self Released)
Ass-Heavy like Mastodon and High On Fire, y'know, that sort of weightiness that you won't even headbang to because your neck feels too heavy while listening to these dudes!  This 3 song debut ep is MUCH grittier and uglier than the aforementioned heavyweights mentioned above!  And that's saying something. -Terrorizor

The L.A. 3-piece is back again with another 'Self-Titled' 5 song effort.  The tracks this time around are even heavier and filled with the same type of skull-crushing grooves that made the first EP so great.

(MF)DOOM Vs. Tom Caruana

MF DOOM Remixed by Tom Caruana

'MF DOOM is one of my favourite rappers. I had collected his acapellas from the last few years. I remixed 4 of his tracks around the time I did the 'Rough Versions Remixes' which 'Change The Beat' featured on.
In putting this together I put the remixes in sequence with some of the spoken word and musical samples that he used on his original tracks. The tracks 'Rock Co Kane Flow' and 'Ghostwhirl' were original tracks which Doom featured on with other rappers, for my remixes I just used his verses. Hopefully Doom will hear this and we'll end up doing an album together :)' -Tom Caruana

Another Jimmy McGriff Drop...

Jimmy McGriff
Groove Grease (1971)

Here's another funky classic to vibe to.  This album has some sick breaks and some familiar samples.  Cypress Hill samples "The Bird" for one of my personal favorites, "Hole in the Head" and by KRS-One for "Hip Hop vs. Rap".  Hot Shit!

Snatch up the whole record HERE!

Some Electric Funk for a Spring Day...

Jimmy McGriff - Electric Funk (1969)

This 1969 Sonny Lester production was one nearly hopelessly lost slab of solid funk. It often popped up in cut-out bins when records were still waxed. When used-record stores started disappearing, beauties like this started vanishing too. But Blue Note’s blessed Rare Groove series has exhumed all 32 minutes of this hard-hitting fon-kee gem (and, to its credit, retained the original but dated cover art too). Acid jazzers are probably already familiar with “The Bird Wave,” which appeared on the Blue Note Rare Grooves compilation issued in 1996. The great news is that the rest of Electric Funk goes like this too. No sap, no frills. Just good true groove. In 1997, nay-sayers accuse this street soul (which prevailed in the early 70s) of being nothing more than TV cop-show music and Blaxploitation soundtrack stuff. Lovers will say that’s the point. But in 1969, this was the next step for soul jazz; a genre Jimmy McGriff has always ruled. From his early Sue classics (all of which were recently released on CD by the Collectibles label) to his Solid State records in the 60s and on to his Sonny Lester productions on Groove Merchant and LRC in the 70s, this man has always known how to rock a groove. HAPPY St. Patricks Day, PLUMBER!! This is for you...

STEEL MAMMOTH - >>Nuclear Ritual<< (2009)

I know a lot of you dig the first LP by these maniacs.
Look at the fucking cover... I mean look at the sick ass 87 minivan. Thank GOD that the music does this blessed cover art justice!! I think you'll agree as well. These aren't just songs...THESE ARE FUCKING HEAVY METAL ANTHEMS!!!!  The Rock is very reminiscent of a Doom and gloom, less coke/more heroin'd out version of Diamond Nights.  Nuclear Ritual's tracks seem MUCH catchier and almost radio friendly at times, which is sort of refreshing right now.  Midway through the record they still throw down some delay drenched progressive Steely Dan guitar work.  On "Atomic Chainsaws" the Mammoth brings some hella melodic garage riffage.  Followed up by some guitar work that you would hear off a classic Iron Maiden record.  I'm HOPING to see these dudes back in the states again pretty soon.  ENJOY!!  Especially Plumber.

Keep an eye out for some really funky shit later tonight.

"Come with me if you want to live"

Goblin Cock
"Come With Me If You Want To Live!"
(2009)

This is Goblin Cock's second effort and it picks up right where 2005's "Bagged and Boarded" left off. If you're unfamiliar with the aforementioned "Bagged and Boarded",  I recommend you scroll down the page a bit and download it for yourself.  That being said... Rob Crow is a fucking genius.  If you're lucky enough to catch them live, they perform in long black robes.  Shit is creepy to say the least. I suppose being named after the genitalia of a mythical creature you would expect a loud growl to go along with the melodic drone of the down-tuned guitars. NOT HERE! Imagine Hum's Matt Talbott(except in perfect pitch) singing melodically about his Dungeons and Dragons excursions.

Here ya go

Fear The Cock

I think we've found a winner for "BEST BAND NAME, EVER!!!"  I doubt I'll be hearing any arguments about that declaration.

More Thulsa Doom for your enjoyment

Thulsa Doom - Keyboard, Oh Lord! Why Don't We

You asked for more Thulsa Doom and I found this lying around.  This album is the latest from
Thulsa Doom.  The song writing on this record is a bit different than their past efforts for the simple fact that they apparently kicked out the original singer, "Papa Doom", due to reasons still unknown.
Oh Yeah...1 more important thing to mention about this record...Thulsa Doom has the balls to actually take a shot at covering "Be Forewarned" the legendary PENTAGRAM!!

And yes they pull that shit off like some fuckin' champs!!

Dusty Medical Records Presents...

...The debut 7" from Milwaukee's STICKS N STONES - 2 infectious pop blasts from this trio of local punk veterans, they being current and former members of Catholic Boys, Sugar Stems, The Flips, Tuff Bananas, The Tears and the Teenage Rejects.

On March 27 we celebrate! Joining Sticks N Stones are two up and coming acts from Chicago, WHITE MYSTERY and OTHER MINDS. White Mystery features the inimitable Miss Alex White and her brother Francis - you may remember Alex and her ferocious garage punk wail (and red afro) from her previous projects Miss Alex White and The Red Orchestra (In The Red) and Hot Machines (Dusty Medical). The band recently scored an endorsement deal with Orange Amplifiers and will be supporting their brand-new self-titled debut with a string of shows at SxSW next week.

Milwaukee's DRUGS DRAGONS round out this stacked bill, and will kick off the festivities with their sound which they describe thusly: "Drugs Dragons carries a violent, menacing, primal vibe undercut with retarded, resin-caked humor and hairy, beer-breathed testosterone... Reminiscent of the Testors knocking back shots with AC/DC and early GG Allin, or Black Sabbath sharing a joint with Bauhaus and the Butthole Surfers through a codeine haze, Drugs Dragons encapsulates a wide spectrum of bad attitude rock n roll while sounding both new and timeless.
And this party wouldn't be a party without The Get Drunk DJs!!!

You NEED some Steel Mammoth in your life right now. Face it.

Steel Mammoth
Atomic Mountain (2007)
I had to cap tonight of with this gem.  If you're not familiar with Steel Mammoth, you're well past due.  Trust me. It's FINNISH hypnotic desert rock that seems to be drug drenched, incredibly coherent, mellow and smart simultaneously. The Vocals blend perfectly with warm guitar tones that remind me of a modern day Supersonic T-Rex!  It's like NOTHING I've ever heard before, which is a quite a feat these days, IMO. And if that's not enough... there's even a hint of Kraut Rock mixed in.  FUCKING AWESOME!  How can you really even go wrong when Steel Mammoth's Mission Statement Reads...

"A lonesome engine cries, howling in the cruel crüel night! Nuclear nightmare, atomic style! Shadow barbarians with lazer eyes, radiation village, the black fire burning bright!"

FUCKIN' A is right!  Now follow the link below for the tasty goodness that is, "Atomic Mountain"

"Ain't Nothin' Gonna Stop The Rock Tonight." NEW BRANT BJORK HERE!!!

Brant Bjork
GODS & GODDESSES  (2010)

The Legend himself is back again with yet another Low Desert Masterpiece for us to vibe with.
If you're unfamiliar with Mr. Brant Bjork .... FEAR NOT!!  He's only the original KYUSS and
FU MANCHU drummer and if you take a moment to actually read the liner notes of the classic
Kyuss and Fu Manchu records, you would know that he either SOLELY wrote or Co-wrote almost
all of the Generator Party HITS!

Thulsa Doom - ...and then take you to a place where jars are kept (2003)

 THULSA DOOM
...And Then Take You To A Place Where Jars Are Kept (2003)

With its year 2000 debut, The Seats Are Soft But the Helmet Is Way Too Tight, Norway's Thulsa Doom quietly concocted a stoner/doom classic to start off the 21st century, paving the way for 2003's subsequent And Then Take You to a Place Where Jars Are Kept to be pegged as the band's inevitable "difficult" follow-up. But in fact, "surprising" is the more appropriate term for what amounts to another very strong outing for the Scandinavian quintet. Simply put, Jars is a pop record disguised as stoner rock in much the same way that Seats was a pure hard rock record disguised as doom metal. In both instances, appearances can be deceiving and first listens confusing, but the undeniable long-term realization is that truly infectious tunes lie at the heart of Thulsa Doom's special formula. At their best, tracks like "How Hard Can It Be," the morose ballad "Shot By Both Sides," and the glorious insta-single "Kick Me" strike an unnerving balance between awesome pop hooks and dreadful despair — all of it conveyed with utmost conviction by expressive frontman Papa Doom. A crucial element of the band's formula, his charismatic delivery and often hilarious lyrics aren't always as spot-on here as they were on previous efforts, being occasionally crowded by shrill backing vocals and coming off a little forced on otherwise stormingly fun cuts like "Why Do You Keep On (Watching the Porno) After You Came" and "Got to Have Mine," but his is still, without question, the best stoner rock voice spawned this side of Kyuss' John Garcia. "Generation 71," "Machine of Oslo," and "Learn from TV" (the latter quoting the first album's head-banging centerpiece, "Ride the Pony," with its outro riff) boast remarkably straightforward, anthemic choruses to go with their humongous grooves, but it's nine-minute closer "Papa Doom Preach (Where Jars Are Kept)" that comes as close to outright doom metal (at least in Thulsa Doom's very broad definition of the style) as anything here, its quietly drawn-out middle section book-ended by monstrously heavy, grinding riffs. All in all, Jars represents another stellar outing for this underappreciated but promising group. (Ed Rivadavia, AMG)
A million thanks to Ed for a fantastic review on one of my favorite bands of ALL TIME.
DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS RECORD!  You'll regret it.  Trust me.
