Milwaukee's SPACECRIME taking production to whole new level...

SPACECRIME
"Da Murder House"
Spacecrime Productions
2014

To celebrate what has now been in the works for what feels like years now, Milwaukee duo, J. Brander (aka Jet Jaguar) and Z. Chappelle (aka Chet Chedder), have been grinding away making twisted, tripped-out, drug-fueled compositions from all different facets of sound and music.  It must be nice having an arsenal of tracks that Spacecrime has been logging over the past couple years, THESE are the 15 tracks they decided to bless us with.  Armed with a SP-303, turntables, and SAMPLES SAMPLES SAMPLES, SPACECRIME is mixing and mashing sounds that may be familiar to the keen ear, but don't let that fool you.  The duo's minimalistic approach to their atmospheric beat production is incredibly refreshing on the debut 2014 LP, "Da Murder House".  Already catapulting them into a beautiful and refreshing new realm only seen by very few that have attempted this sort of music before. You can hear hip-hop,  kraut-rock, prog, jazz, punk, breaks, soul and much much more all laced up with a heaping serving of Sci-Fi and Horror overtones. John Brander and Zach Chappelle have all but mastered the art of what some would call "Soundtrack" music.  Tracks such as "Bad Blood" , "Night Nomads" (My personal favorite) , and "Man in the High Castle" harken back to the days of an early RJD2 or MADLIB. This LP is just BEGGING to be laced with an emcee. Something you can bang at full volume or something to make love to your old lady by. WINK!  "Da Murder House" appeals to anyone and everyone that has an appreciation for all things beautiful, disgusting...PREPARE for a glorious, nightmarish, romp into the realms of your mind. THIS is Psychedelic. THIS is HEAVY. If you're a fan of DJ Shadow, J-Dilla, Planet Asia and Madlib...I'm certain you'll be rocking the hell out of "Da Murder House" in no time!

"Who do you think you are...?? Mike Patton?"

CANADA STAND UP!! Chron Goblin has done the deed on their sophomore LP entitled, "Life For The Living"

CHRON GOBLIN
"Life For The Living"
MAPL
2013

"From the smoke-filled rooms of university res to beer-stained stages across western Canada, Chron Goblin spread the stoke wherever they go.  Filling bars and venues alike since their 2009 inception, the party-hardened four-piece have amassed a loyal fan base with their addictive on-stage energy as well as two intoxicating rock concoctions: a self-titled EP in 2010 followed by 2011’s acclaimed full-length One Million From The Top." -Via Ian Lemke (CHRON GOBLIN BIO PAGE)

The opener, 'Deserter", sets you off into space with it's psyched-out intro that breaks brilliantly into the impending onslaught of pure heavy, fuzzed-out, riffage that follows into something Tim Suit(Clutch) wishes he wrote! No disrespect to the elders that came before. But with the subtlety of the intro into the heaviest sonic swell that just caves the floor in it's so heavy,  followed by Josh Sandulak's yell…THIS IS HOW TO START A RECORD OFF! PERIOD. Throughout the entire LP you most definitely get the vibe they've been doing this for 20 years but it's been only 4 YEARS!  The breakdowns are absolutely spine-chilling to say the least. Not too much 'noodling' with shredding, filler type bullshit around on guitar (much appreciated by me at least) which is indeed refreshing because for once, the proper transitions take precedent here and the dominence of Chron Goblin begins to shine right through.  They just fucking own you on this very reminiscent of MAN'S RUIN-era SUPLECS with more of a crash your car into a brick wall sound!
Darty(Guitarist) has a very unique style to his playing.  I hear country and at times throughout the record I feel like these cats crawled outta the swamps of Louisiana or the hills of Appalachia.
Deeper into the LP come tracks, for example, "Give No More", which has a more crying out vibe to it.  You can hear Josh's vocal really peak on this track. His range is spectacular and he maintains his key to absolute perfection. Very impressive. Not to mention Darty's stellar guitar mastery that blends perfectly with the brilliant intricacies and spot on transitions. Good god... And to think this is Chron Goblin's sophomore release?!With the release of the "Life For The Living" LP ---- I can honestly say they have Canada covered. Throughout their 4 years together they've shared the stage with Devin Townsend Project, BISON B.C., 3 Inches Of Blood and many others.

For western Canada, I don't think I'm by any means going out on a limb by saying, CHRON GOBLIN OWNS YOU! There's something for all fans of metal, riff-rock, psych…It's all here! I can't even begin to start comparing Chron Goblin to other bands. With a knife to my throat...I would say if you like KYUSS, RED FANG, SUPLECS, and TOOL...You've found your match! There are absolutely no boundaries WHATSOEVER when it comes to the music and that's something they are proud of and I dig it. The gem that is "Blood Flow" proves just that. I don't even have words for this track! You can literally feel the hard work, toxins, blood, beer, smoke (u catch my drift) and the grueling process of making a GOOD LP being poured out on this track. This is by far one of the best LP's for 2013 and extremely refreshing for the STONER/FUZZ/METAL genre. These cats aren't going ANYWHERE BUT UP! I can't wait for this band make it's way out on the road. When you hear this...I think you'll agree. -David Barski

Maryland Monsters, CHOWDER, slips it in

Days of the Doomed III and The Bloody Glove
Present...

CHOWDER
"Passion Rift"
2012
Bland Hand/I,Voidhanger

Another great band to come out of the Maryland/DC area!

Songs such as “The Innsmouth Look” and “Head Full of Rats,” with their forward-rushing, unrelenting progressive metal, sit next to atmospheric pieces such as “Mazuku” and “Mysterioid,” in a mix part hardcore, part Lovecraft, and part autobiography. And then there is the epic title cut “Passion Rift,” as big in its scope as “Hemispheres,” a journey through a landscape at times peaceful, tense, melancholic, aggressive, and nightmarish. This is music that communicates something important, and it does so without lyrics or vocals.
Born in hardcore, bred on metal, and nourished by prog, Chowder’s all-instrumental music allows Josh’s precision arrangements and heavy guitar playing, Chad’s technical yet propulsive drumming, and Doug’s deep bass anchoring to rattle walls and turn heads. Fans of The Obsessed, Unorthodox, Rush, Godflesh, Bad Brains, and Fugazi, take notice.

Maryland's finest... Beelzefuzz DOTD3

DAYS OF THE DOOMED III
AND THE BLOODY GLOVE
PRESENT...

BEELZEFUZZ

Beelzefuzz is full of colors they're very hard to classify and that's quite fun in their case. This 5 tracks demo is very good and shows great promise for this band. Like their name indicates, it's fuzzy but it's also quite melodic. The sound is rich and I was surprised to learn that they were only 3 dudes. The vocalist/guitarist/leader Dana Ortt is a genuine talent and he's the true driving force. The whole demo completely blew me away with songs like ''Lotus Jam'' or ''Hardluck Melody''. While it's doom, I can't really feel the omnipresent imprint of Black Sabbath in their sound. There's a decent NWOBHM influence especially in the vocals and some of the more melodic riffs, but the main thing I sensed in Beelzefuzz is the overt psychedelic and hard rock influences. These guys are definitely big fans of Led Zep, T-Rex, Cream or Steppenwolf but they mixed this love for the golden era of rock with Judas Priest and doom metal. The demo while not quite heavy or even not totally metal totally pays off with its slow groovy numbers like the opening track ''Peace Mind'', it's sexy, comforting and alluring. I do feel like in an hippie harem full of scantily eunuchs on drugs, probably mushrooms or acid. There's a fountain full of Champagne or Mountain Dew in the middle of the huge tent, I won't try it personally but these guys probably did.

You can feeeeeeel the love in their music, it's not dark at all. The riffs are often joyous, it's like if their whole world ignored that grunge and self-hatred was once something popular. Yeah, even Dave Grohl realized that but his music is inane, at least he teamed up with John Paul Jones to create groovy stuff in Them Crooked Vultures! Talking of grunge I can't say they ignored the 90s phenomenon completely. Dana's voice can be compared to Staley, Cornell or Vedder a bit but on super Silver Sour Diesel Haze or whatever drug that makes him happy. I usually dislike happy music but this is a totally great ''I'm on the patio with a cold beer during a sunny summer day'' kind of band and I can appreciate that. Their retro rock formula works and they don't need dildos and bullplugs to make it worthwhile.

Chicago's Pale Horseman...Prepare yourself for an assualt!

PALE HORSEMAN
"Self-Titled"
2013
Independent

First things first... This is one of the tightest, heaviest records I've heard in a very very long time. The LP kicks off with the track "Black River" with a Psyched out sonic swell so intense... just to drop right into extremely heavy Bungle chords and the chaos ensues. The dual vocals have an overall Neurosis-esque feel to them with growls reminiscent of Aaron Turner of Isis/HydraHead fame.  But without the repetitiveness Neurosis and Isis are so well-known for. This has quickly climbed up to one of the bands to watch for in 2013!!  As "Black River" flows it just gets more and more brutal and then seamlessly transitions into one of the HEAVIEST breakdowns. We're talking skull-crushing, ANVILS falling from the sky type breakdowns.  No weak shit here, son! Lyrically this LP is filled with themes of end times, misanthropy, drugs and depression. And it all blends perfectlyI HAVE NO CLUE how this band has not been picked up by a label yet!  It's almost a travesty!!  This is how it's done. My personal favorite on the LP is the 4th track entitled, "Aborigine".  It slams you in the face with some sick riffs.  Reminiscent  vocally and musically to such bands as... Neurosis, Mastodon, Cavity, and GODFLESH with the grooves of EyeHateGod and that sweet NOLA sound, but with a refreshing twist.  It's not all pentatonics here! We're talking melodic minors that carry the album almost flawlessly.  Continuing on, "Paranormal Unknown", takes you on a slowed down, pure psyched-out sludge ride into the abyss.  Chris's drumming really shines through on the track, "Souls of Us". His accent's and intricacies match the amazing guitar riffage perfectly.  This is just plain STELLAR!  DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS BAND!     -D. Barski

The onslaught continues straight thru beginning to end.  The LP contains 8 total songs.

New Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats pick up right where they left off!

Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats
"Mind Control"
2013
Rise Above/Metal Blade

Quick review from Doommantia

With “Blood Lust” being one of the most defining records of 2011 (and most probably the entire decade that will come) UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS became “underground” stars in less than a night and judging from the price of their “long gone” releases, they have turned into the ultimate collector’s band. “Mind Control” UNCLE ACID’s (yeah, the “& THE DEADBEATS” part is cut from now on) third album is fairly regarded as one of the most anticipated records of the year.

From the very notes of “Mt. Abraxas” it is clear that the band walks the same path as “Blood Lust”: Horror movie themes, occultism, drugs, 70’s psych, BLACK SABBATH and co. To be fair “Mind Control” shows a wider variety of influences, none of which falls outside the “retro” scope of course. So, you might come across some BEATLES or even early IRON MAIDEN influences but all blended artistically well.

Although, most of the tracks have simpler song structures the new album requires more careful listening. It can be said that the record is divided in two parts, with the first containing all the “Pop” tracks and the second focusing on the psychedelic side of things.

The difference here is that UNCLE ACID have lost the advantage of surprise and with it they seem to have abolished the inspirational driving force that made “Blood Lust” a big hit. From that perspective “Mind Control” doesn’t seem enough to repeat the blast of its predecessor. On the other hand the true retro vide that every UNCLE ACID release supplies to the fans is somewhat phenomenal, So the final question is: can you resist this overdose of 70’s horror? I doubt it…

INDIAN HANDCRAFTS' "Civil Disobedience For Losers" LP DESTRUCTION!

INDIAN HANDCRAFTS
"Civil Disobedience For Losers"
Sargent House
2012

Opener and highlight “Bruce Lee” could inspire a whole graphic novel, or at least get optioned for a Tarantino-produced Grindhouse flick. It sets up the main ingredient on the duo’s sophomore LP, Civil Disobedience For Losers: riffs. Riff may be a four-letter word to some, but the Ontario duet have refined tastes: Queens of the Stone Age, Helmet, and Melvins all get nods in Daniel Brandon Allen’s guitar-work, whose minor-pentatonic sludge should be tabbed-up by fledgling guitarists in no time. Even the lead guitar work on the album puts the Tom Morello/Jack White octave pedal to new and good use.
Beyond the best-foot-forward songs that the riff-mining Allen and drummer Brandyn James Aikins soak themselves in, the sci-fi, pulpy tracks stretch far across a relatively small spectrum. The ur-heavy metal of “Terminal Horse” to the Lemmy-via-Scorpions ballad “Coming Home” all leave a different mark, aided by producer Toshi Kasai, whose work with Tool and Big Business are felt strongly here. There’s some filler weighing down the back half of the album, but that’s only a small leak in this colossal galleon.
“What time is it?/ it’s time for red action!” scream Allen and Aikins, early in the album. Red Action: drink tallboys, get stoned, read comics, palm-mute your Ibanez, and blast it out your Hemi. Indian Handcrafts live in the lost sci-fi fantasy world of ’80s metal, a world that under less able hands would lay flat on the back of the Algebra notebook. They hoist their banner just under Black Sabbath’s and reanimate all those familiar monsters to make them fight again, harbingers of a zombie metal apocalypse. -Consequence of Sound

INDIAN JEWELRY | "Invasive Exotic"

INDIAN JEWELRY
"Invasive Exotic"
2006
Skinny Wolves/Monitor

Invasive Exotics crawls into your brain, buries itself deep within your medulla oblongata, and unleashes a furious noise upon your waking mind that grips your body in a numbing paralysis. Indian Jewelry make music for wandering the scorching deserts after ingesting heroic doses of peyote. As their name implies, a certain native presence infiltrates the droning dissonance that pervades their debut album. Warning: this is not an album you put on for a sunny drive through the country with your significant other, but rather suited for those lonesome excursions across highways through vast nothingness when your consciousness can be as much an ally as it is a foe. Houston, Texas' Indian Jewelry adorns their music with a sense of impending doom, a motif that is both inescapable and yet utterly alluring. It's mysterious, alien, bizarre, and feels like it should exist only in the mind of a mental patient. And that's exactly what makes listening to it so interesting. The aesthetic opposite of industrial music, while still borrowing from the likes of Trent Reznor and pioneers of synthesizer drones Suicide, the sounds on Invasive Exotics are firmly rooted in the arid landscape of some unknown wilderness, seemingly abandoned by the modern world. - M.Simpson

Sweden brings Ghost "Opus Eponymous" to the glove

GHOST
"Opus Eponymous"
Rise Above/Metal Blade
2010

"Opus Eponymous" is the first album by Ghost, released on October 18, 2010. What you can hear here is heavy, doomy riffs in contrast with softer parts and choruses ruled by keyboards, all of this to create an amazing, sometimes dark atmosphere. It sounds like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple had a baby, and it kinda sounds like Blue Öyster Cult too. Some people also compare them with Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, mostly because of their theatral live performances. The band was formed in 2008 in Linköping, Sweden, and it's line up consists of vocalist Papa Emeritus and five "Nameless Ghouls": 2 guitarists, bassist, drummer and keyboardist. Kinda creative thing. The album has received mostly positive reviews, embracing fans from hardcore metalheads into death/black metal to stoner rock fans. The album also contains "Here Comes The Sun" in a heavier version as a bonus track. This is another great record from the Swedish rock scene, which I recommend you all to check it out.  - iommi600

Belgium's MILLIONAIRE now playing at the bloodyglove

MILLIONAIRE
"Paradisiac"
Pias/Shock
2005

If Belgium act Millionaire isn't a name you're familiar with, then it soon will be. Although relatively unknown to most, the four-piece act released their debut album as far back as 2001 (Outside The Simian Flock), and while it received positive feedback from the press, Millionaire hardly became a household name. The bands luck soon changed when while supporting Masters Of Reality, when the band's debut found it's way into the hands of Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme. Taken by their music, the band soon found themselves getting major exposure on a nightly basis on tour. Fast forward a couple of years and the connection between the two acts continued with Millionaire vocalist/guitarist Tim Vanhamel collaborated with Homme and Jesse 'The Devil' Hughes in Eagles Of Death Metal, who released their debut album Peace Love Death Metal in 2004 to critical acclaim.

Twelve months on, and with the freeing up of schedules, Vanhamel and Millionaire (Who also consist of bassist/vocalist Bas Remans, keyboardist/vocalist Aldo Struyf (Who recorded and toured with Mark Lanegan for 2004's Bubblegum) and drummer Dave Schroyen) re-entered the studio with Homme behind the console (After completing work on Q.O.T.S.A.'s Lullabies To Paralyze) to start work on their second album.

A simple cursory listen through Paradisiac immediately tells you one important fact - Pigeonholing Millionaire's sound is a pointless exercise. Yes, Homme's presence is certainly felt in places, but only in regards to giving the band a meatier sound than the sound appeared on their more pop sounding debut. Millionaire isn't mimicking Q.O.T.S.A., but they certainly rock, if in a strange and unusual way.

The opening tracks I'm On A High (Which is the single) and A Lust Unmatched are huge, thumping hook laden lazy rockers that give the misleading impression that the band are a somewhat experimental stoner rock act (The loops and effects add a different dimension to proceedings), but it's the follow up track For A Maid that really throws a spanner in the works with it's Muse like leanings within the piercing high volumed chorus and edgy rock and roll vibe. The back to basics primitive feel of Streetlife Cherry is a sure candidate for a future single release, while the darker and more tempered atmosphere felt within Rise And Fall and the acoustic Ballad Of Pure Thought affirm a more mature outing the second time around for the group.

Providing a little more heaviness in the guitar stakes, Alpha Male, Love Is A Sickness the creepy (Highlight of the album) We Don't Live There Anymore, the down and dirty grit of Wake Up The Children and the bizarre cut/patched up A Face That Doesn't Fit (Along with the uncredited Nocturn at the end) all audibly stand apart from each other, but somehow manage to fit under the same 'rock' banner without sounding like an incoherent mess of different styles

Heavy Heavy Low Low | "Turtle Nipple and the Toxic Shock

Heavy Heavy Low Low
"Turtle Nipple and The Toxic Shock"
Ferret
2008

Taking the direction of, but not limited to an early release on SST, Dischord, or Touch and Go, HHLL thrives on a formula of minimalist punk energy, choppy tempos and the most bastardized take on prog rock you've probably ever heard. With sprinkles of glitchy keyboards, slabs of noisecore and frantic lyrics tossed in the mix, Turtle Nipple will get the rocks off for HHLL's endless legions of fans and usher in a throng of new ones.

When asked to describe the band's current direction, drummer Christopher Fritter states "I'd say this new CD brings my mind to another level. At times I just want to cry while listening to it. Then randomly I just want to hit a fool in the face." Spoken like a true craftsman who took part in creating this bipolar cacophony of an album. Yes, it will mess with your head but it'll prove to be the most exhilarating mind fuck you'll probably ever have.

Glowsun brings the "The Sundering" to the bloodyglove

Glowsun
"The Sundering"
Buzzville/Suburban
2008

France. They've brought us baguettes, croissants and guys like me, who act as if they can speak the language, some pussy here and there (Monsieur de la Boulanger if you're reading this, which I doubt, I didn't understand your daughter when she said she was only seventeen, I only know the number soixant-neuf in French, I'm sorry ok?). Musically they also brought us some good stuff. In that pile of good stuff I'm talking about, Glowsun is the best I've heard so far.
If you enjoy stoner, like I do, you'll love these guys. Are they original and do they define the genre in a new way never heard before? Hell no! They're just really good at making Stoner Rock! I'm talking nineties here, I'm talking Kyuss and early QOTSA here! Not a whole lot of vocals, but just enough to make sure it isn't an instrumental album. Good drumming and great, great guitars. If you picture a guitar sound when thinking of Stoner Rock, this is it! It's hard as hell, it's mushy like it should be and the man found his way to a wah pedal and knows how to use this fine commodity!

The album starts of with an easy song that gets thrashed with harder intervals and some good guitarwork! Highlight of this album is the 7+ minutes song 'Inside My Head'. In this song Glowsun goes all out and plays a lot of great riffs. This song never gets boring, believe me I tried...I listened to it over and over, but it just doesn't. This might be one of the better albums made in Europe this year.

So ladies and gentledudes, go check this band out, but be careful...You might like it!

"Say Goodnight To The World" DAX RIGGS

Dax Riggs
"Say Goodnight To The World"
Fat Possum
2010

This LP falls almost perfectly into Riggs' wheelhouse.  Still intensely blues influenced with that unmistakeable style he encompasses so well.  "Say Goodnight..." picks up where "...Blood or Love" left off, this time with more emphasis on complete song structure.  The backing band does a fantastic job of flooding the tracks with lots of delays and psychedelic drug-drenched guitars, thus capturing the essence that is "Say Goodnight to the World".  Standout tracks for me include probably the BEST cover I personally have ever heard, "Heartbreak Hotel", "Grave Dirt On My Blue Suede Shoes", and the more raucous, "Let Me Be Your Cigarette", round out what is yet another stellar effort from New Orleans' best crooner, DAX RIGGS.  Enjoy.

Memphis boys, The Heavy Eyes' Self-Titled LP now rocking the bloody glove

The Heavy Eyes
"Heavy Eyes"
Self-Released
2011
I've spent a lot of time with the debut release by this Tennessee band. Heavy Eyes seems to capture everything I dig in a rock record. Lots of fuzzy guitars, groovy foot stomping riffs and tons of attitude during its 11 tracks.

Imagine if you will, Brant Bjork, The White Stripes and Fu Manchu all sitting around puffing on a hookah listening to Zeppelin albums, then picking up their gear and just going for it. That's the vibe I get from this impressive slab of rock put forth on here. Plenty of soul and a real sense of honesty is captured during the whole duration of the album.

Seems to be that all these new bands that are opting to put out their music themselves, whether it's through iTunes, bandcamp or whatever file hosting website they choose is really making things interesting. The production on the album is stellar and really has a live jammy feeling to it. Maybe being mixed and mastered in the city where rock and roll started with Elvis in Memphis has something to do with it. Some of that voodoo may be rubbing off here. The band has posted on their bandcamp page: "We hope this album melts your speakers".  I'd say...mission accomplished!

Sweden's Greenleaf has been a favorite of mine for many many years now.  They've been putting out quality straight up Rock and Roll that would fall into that vein of "Stoner Rock".  The more I listen to this record, I hear far superior production value and mastering.  The drums sound so good on this LP.  Nice and loud.  Bonham would be proud.  It's a hard-driving sexy fuzzed out classic!  THIS is how to put a 'Supagroup' together, damnit!  Take NOTE.  Featuring BLOODYGLOVE favorites such as members of...TRUCKFIGHTERS, DOZER, OPETH, DEMON CLEANER and LOWRIDER.  This is how it's done.  Psyched out grooves flood the middle of the LP with a sonic overload of the perfect fuzzed out tone and delays...ENJOY THIS!!

Creature With The Atom Brain | "Transylvania" now playing the bloody glove

Creature With The Atom Brain
"Transylvania"
The End Records
2009
The pedigree of Belgian group Creature with the Atom Brain is phenomenal. Creature With The Atom Brain members have toured and been part of some real heavyweight outfits such as QOTSA and the underrated Millionaire. The album's guest stars, such as Mark Lanegan and Tim Vanhamel, are notable catches. The varied influences on the band's MySpace page are spot on. But for all the talent, experience and attempts at musical variety here, Transylvania is just missing that certain ‘something’ that "...Golden Gate Bridge" encompassed and feels like rock-by-numbers, which can possibly be attributed to a recent jaunt touring with Dead Weather sucking their very souls dry whilst they slept. For the record, I am a HUGE fan of The Dead Weather.

That’s not to say this is a bad record as such. When it’s good and the band lock themselves into a tight, six-minute psychedelic riffathon then it is wholly decent and worthwhile stuff. Like when, two minutes into the upbeat title track, the bass goes all fuzzy. Or when the opener ‘I Rise the Moon’ saunters into its blissed-out chorus like a stoner exiting a bedsit at 8am on a sunny morn. Or for all of the understated but genre-melding six minutes of ‘Darker than a Dungeon’, one of the few tracks where they vary the pace and time signature throughout the song’s duration.

But is it enough to hark back to bands like Kyuss and Melvins, merely aping them and providing a modern day alternative when other rock bands have moved the genre on in the meantime?

Such is the dilemma with Creature with the Atom Brain. If all you want is a sophomoric record in a largely sophomoric branch of rock’s history, then ‘Transylvania’ will serve you well. For the rest of us, until they develop a sound of their own they’ll merely continue to be the bridesmaid, but never the bride…
