It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land...

SOULSAVERS
"It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land"
Red Ink Recordings
2008

"There's gonna be a revival tonight," intones Mark Lanegan, accompanied by members of the London Community Gospel Choir, to open the second Soulsavers album from British producers Rich Machin and Ian Glover. Enveloped by a lush organ and dusty, looped beat, Lanegan sounds, if not reborn, then hopeful, which is a fresh look for the grunge-scarred meth-blues crooner. Machin and Glover see themselves as a posttrip- hop, Southern Gothic version of Portishead, with Lanegan as the weary diva, singing on eight of these ten atmospheric tracks. Frustratingly, the duo's cinematic visions simmer more than they soar, though a reimagining of the Rolling Stones' "No Expectations" as a stately Leonard Cohen–esque benediction is stunning.

Denmark's BABY WOODROSE raid the bloody glove

BABY WOODROSE
"BLOWS YOUR MIND"
BAD AFRO RECORDS
2001

My Danish brethren have done it again!  This band is pure sleaze garage goodness.

In reality a one-man operation by Lorenzo Woodrose who wrote the songs, played all the instruments, produced the record together with Riky Woodrose and put it out on his own Pan Records in 2001. More obscure, psych and lo-fi than the new stuff but the songs are every bit as cool! Presented in a daring sleeve by Malleus sure to raise an eyebrow or two.

Tracks:

1. No Way Out
2. Baby Blows Your Mind
3. What A Burn!
4. Caught In A Whirl
5. Pandora
6. Spinning Wheels Of Fire
7. Living A Dream
8. Flaminca
9. Maya
10. D’ya Get What You Give?
11. Kara Lynn
12. Right To Get High
13. Mind And Soul
14. Nobody Spoil My Fun

Pirate Love slips into the Bloody Glove...

PIRATE LOVE
"BLACK VODOUN SPACE BLUES"
VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS
2008

'Black Vodoun Space Blues', named after a Johnny Thunders song, is Pirate Love's first full-lenght, which was released on the famous Voodoo Rhythm record label. Mixing 60's garage with 70's nihilistic punk, this Oslo-sextet brings with 'Black Voodoo...' a furious, psychedelic and very solid garage (surf)rock album, which stands comfortably alongside the ranks of Black Lips, Demon’s Claws & 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster. -pascalito

the bloody glove is proud to bring you Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan | "Hawk"

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan
"HAWK"
V2/Vanguard
2010

Two more complementary sets of pipes have rarely been paired—and while that’s been the intention all along, the duo’s third full-length, Hawk, still banks on that delicious friction, and does it well. Campbell’s pixie-like chirp and Lanegan’s slow-burn growl entwine to do particular justice to Townes Van Zandt’s “Snake Song,” one of two covers of the late Texas country-folk legend. Throughout the song’s pulsing, loping blues, the duo’s voices don’t harmonize so much as curl around each other like perfume and pipe smoke. Great Album.

Alain Johannes | "Spark" 2010 AMAZEMENT!!!

Alain Johannes
"Spark"
Rekords Rekords
2010

First off this album sounds like it could be the next Desert Sessions.  That good!
Alain Johannes proves that proverb with Spark, his solo debut. Due out October 5th via Rekords Rekords, Spark is a heartfelt, honest and hypnotic collection of songs that Alain penned to commemorate his late wife and creative partner, Natasha Shneider. It's more than a tribute though; it's the purest celebration of her spirit through song. Alain plays like his soul depends on it during album opener "Endless Eyes." Through tribal percussion and cigar box guitar strumming, the song breathes organically. Meanwhile, there's a poignant lyrical poetry at the center of "Make God Jealous" and "Spider" that resounds just as powerfully as the album's fretless guitar hum and the somber cello on "Speechless." From co-founding Eleven with Natasha to collaborating with everyone from Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures to Chris Cornell and Mark Lanegan, Alain remains a prolific force. Spark shows listeners every side of this unique songwriter, producer and composer.

Abdullah | "Graveyard Poetry"

Abdullah
"Graveyard Poetry"
MeteorCity
2002

Many thanks to Rob (Stonerrock.com) for the killer review...

Well, it only took me about 2 and a half minutes into this record before I realized that I was going to like it. Abdullah hasn't disappointed me in the past and knew that it was going to be some serious hard rock doom metal with great melodic vocals and excellent lyrics...I got that and more.
This is a stack of rock for one, with 13 new cuts that all range on the average between 4 minutes to 7-8 minutes in length. The first song 'Black Helicopters' starts out with a chugging soul riff that is heavy on the doom side with blues based hooks and chunky overdriven guitars. The vocals are over the top melodic, much along the lines of Solitude Aeturnus's front man, but not nearly as operatic. The hooks and slowed down temporary time changes in this song reeled me in like a hooked catfish. The chunky metal riffs throughout are tight and on par guitar wise with Penance or Oversoul...along those lines.
A little further in a track called 'Deprogrammed' sparks your attention with its blast beat intro similar to late 70's Judas Priest, or more recently Boulder. Great melodic vocals and heavy riffs that are trucking along like a semi truck on the freeway. Great changes...this song is so 'Sin after Sin' Priest...really! But, different of course. The guitar leads on this record are top notch and often are doubled with another guitar to get those Iron Maiden/Priest s t y l e harmonies. The overdubs on the vocals are subtle and sure genius. Great musicianship all the way through...man!
I don't want to spoil the whole album for you, but I can tell you for sure that Abdullah has truly outdone themselves this time. If you have liked these cats in the past, then you will love this album. It's got all the great hooks and melodies that are Abdullah- but this is one louder and better. If you like classic rock/doom or metal of any sort and haven't gotten into these guys then this is a good time. This release surpasses many out this year on all sorts of levels. I am hooked...

The Almighty.... ACID KING

Acid King
"Down With The Crown"
Man's Ruin (RIP)
1997

"Down With The Crown" by Acid King and "Wanted Dead or Alive" byAltamont were both 10"s released by Man's Ruin Records that were then later reissued as a split, which is super appropriate since Altamont has Dale Crover and Acid king has his (now ex) wife Lori S. I had a bitch of a time tracking this down for some reason so I thought I would share it with my fellow "Glovers". First up is "Teen Dusthead" by Acid King. Let me try to sum this up as quickly as possible: it's dirty, fuzzed out, smooth, heavy and psychedelic. It's usually hard for me to be sold on female vocals for some reason but i fully enjoy Lori's vocal efforts on this. This was the EP that sold me on Acid King after hearing a good amount of material like "Busse Woods" that I was unsure about, so be sure to give this a shot if you feel the same way.

Track Listing
  1. Teen Dusthead (Peep the weaponry here)
  2. Full Reverse

EARLY MAN | DEATH POTION

Early Man
"Death Potion"
The End Recordings
2010

Early Man is a thrash metal band from Brooklyn, NY and some of their influences include Black Sabbath, Kreator, Megadeth and Judas Priest, among others. The title track starts with a thrash attack that’s strongly reminiscent of early Metallica. Adam Bennati’s drumming mixes in really well with the guitars of Pete Macy and Mike Conte. Not to be left out, Tim Ramage lays down some killer bass-lines as well. “Brainwash at Birth” is another quality track; both remind me of modern thrash/crossover bands such Municipal Waste and Iron Age.
Other standouts include “Nine Riders” (hide your mothers, hide your sisters, this is sinister as fuck!), “Fight”, “Unseen Tormentor”, “The Undertaker Is Calling You”, “Killdrone” (the longest, heaviest track on this album) and “Six Mothers Of The War God”.
Death Potion takes a tried and proven thrash formula and injects it with new life. It has nearly everything that I look for when I review thrash and I’d like to see Early Man hone their chops over time.

2009

Mini Mansions are a Los Angeles band founded Michael Shuman, Zach Dawes and Tyler Parkford.

Mini Mansions was founded in 2009 after the Queens of the Stone Age decided to take a break after touring in support of Era Vulgaris. Their self-released EP from 2009 contains nine tracks. Mini Mansions style has been compared to The Beatles, Elliott Smith and Fountains of Wayne.  Pretty Rad and Spacey. Look for a new LP very soon on Rekords Rekords.  Holla.

Neurot Recordings Presents...The New U.S. XMAS...

U.S. Christmas
"Run Thick In The Night"
Neurot
2010

us christmas is a band from the appalachian mountains in western north carolina and eastern tennessee. the band plays a unique brand of psychedelic, high-volume blues rock that evades any easy classification. us christmas now approaches a decade of playing, recording, and evolving, and continues to blur the boundaries of heavy music with ear splitting rock that is by turns jangly, crushing, and dark. the band has often been associated with space rock, and german rolling stone even included the band in an article / compilation cd on the history of that genre. close attention to the bands lyrical content will show that us christmas is not at all concerned with outer space, but rather focus on themes of earth, nature, and terrestrial human history. in fact, the mountains and people of western north carolina are a primary influence on the bands sound. though many have focused on the bands use of vintage synthesizers and
theremin, the band does not rely on any one instrument to create its bizarre sounds proof that brains and hands are a musicians most important tools. us christmas recorded its fifth full-length album, 'run thick in the night', with producer / engineer sanford parker (minsk, buried at sea).

Southern Lord's Black Doom Boys, Thou, raid the glove...

Thou
"Rendon Singles"
Southern Lord
2010

"Thou" is a Baton Rouge Quintet that play the type of blackened Sludge/Doom that fans of Khanate and Burning Witch are probably missing nowadays. Their first full lengths "Tyrant" and "Peasant" are 2 of the most promising doom albums to have come out in awhile, and this prolific group is a welcome change at a time when most good doom bands have barely released anything or are broken up. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of their third full-length album - it's title "Summit" is the only news I have heard of it thus far.
I particularly enjoy their splits and EPs, which include a collection of Black Sabbath covers called "Through the Empires of Eternal Void" (their version of Black Sabbath's song Black Sabbath from the album Black Sabbath is one of the best Black Sabbath covers I've heard. Ha - let's see someone else fit that many Black Sabbath references in one sentence!) They also seem to be very DIY and have a strong political aspect similar to hardcore/crust punk bands a la "His Hero is Gone" which I consider a definite plus (they have a fucking song called "The Bleeding Genitals of Every Rapist Hang Bleeding From These Trees," you can't get awesomer than that!)
